Brachioplasty Surgery, also known as an Arm Lift, is one of the amazing surgeries we offer at Brampton Plastic Surgery.
What is Brachioplasty Surgery?
Brachioplsty surgery is a day surgery usually preformed under general anesthesia at the Brampton Civic Hospital or The Peel Urgent Care Center. It is done by Dr. Haywood herself creating incisions on the sides and back of arms. Once the fat is removed the tissues are brought back together and sutured. The amount of skin that needs to be and can be removed will decide the size on the incision(s). Excess fat may also be removed at this time.
Is this surgery for me?
The most ideal candidate for surgery is someone a non-smoker with no underlying health conditions and is not on blood thinners, or is able to stop blood thinners. It is a fact that smoking significantly delays healing and puts anyone considering surgery at a higher risk. In addition, this surgery is ideal for someone who has lost a significant amount of weight or anyone really with sagging loose skin under their arms and able to maintain a stable weight.
Risks and Recovery
There are risk associated with any surgery both big or small. Basic risks include but are not limited to infection, blood clots (very rare), and drainage issues. Most commonly antibiotics are used to treat any infections. To minimize the risk of blood clots it is very important to follow Dr. Haywood’s follow up instructions and move as much as recommended. Dr. Haywood will go over all risks and instructions with you.
Scars will be present. Poor and delayed healing will largely affect the ability to see the scars. Smoking is something that significantly causes poor or delayed healing. Aftercare and scar prevention instructions will be given to you by Dr. Haywood. In office we carry our favorite- the Vivier Scar Gel and we suggest this to all of our patients to reduce the appearance of scarring after surgery.
Recovery will require a few days of downtime. This may take 4-6 weeks for all bruising and swelling to recede. On average it is asked that you refrain from any strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks as well. Scarring will begin to fade around 6 months. We recommend Vivier Scar Gel for the best result in the appearance of your scars. You will have regular follow up appointments with Dr. Haywood and can always contact the clinic with any of your questions or concerns. You will also have access to home-care clinic’s for any urgent and wound care needs.
